The Bush Family Tree, Explained

A visual guide to five generations of the Bush family — from a steel-and-banking fortune to two U.S. presidents, a Florida governor, and the dynasty's grandchildren.

The Bush Family Tree, Explained

Few American families have shaped national politics like the Bushes. Across five generations the dynasty climbed from industrial wealth to a U.S. Senate seat, then to two presidencies and a governorship — the second father-and-son presidential pair in the nation's history. This guide walks through who's who.

First generation — steel and banking

The dynasty's money came from two directions. Samuel P. Bush ran Buckeye Steel Castings in Ohio, while George Herbert Walker built a Wall Street banking house and lent his name to golf's Walker Cup. Their children — Prescott Bush and Dorothy Walker — would marry and merge the two fortunes.

Third generation — George H.W. Bush and siblings

Of Prescott and Dorothy's five children, George H.W. Bush went furthest: naval aviator, congressman, CIA director, vice president, and finally the 41st President of the United States. With Barbara Pierce he raised the generation that would carry the name into the next century.

Fourth generation — two presidents in one family

George H.W. and Barbara had six children. George W. Bush became the 43rd President; Jeb Bush served two terms as Governor of Florida and ran for president in 2016. Their sister Robin died of leukemia as a small child — a loss that shadowed the family for decades. Neil, Marvin, and Doro built lives in business and public service away from the spotlight.
